Get Writing
So you want to be a good writer? Good, you need a few awkward moments to turn you into a great writer! And this exercise is a start!
To get your creative mind into gear, here is an exercise to hone your writing style.
The point of this exercise is to find your talent by proving to yourself that you have the ability to write something and improve on it very quickly!
Write a short, 250-word story about your life. It’s sometimes difficult to write about ourselves, but hey, did you think this was going to be easy?
Be specific. Be compelling. Be descriptive.
You can either use the boxes below, on a piece of paper or on a word processor, either way, please do this exercise!
Here comes the cringe! Once you have written about yourself, I want you to read it out loud as if you are telling your story to someone.
Got it? Do IT…!
Feels weird, huh? Good, because now it’s going to get even more weird.
I want you to now record yourself by reading what you have written! Don’t focus on how terrible you feel your voice sounds, no one likes the sound of their own voice, so hold your opinions for just a second.
Notice the style, pauses, vocabulary and tone of what you have written, how you read it to yourself and how you heard it on your recording.
