This lecture covers all the troubleshooting guides for ice machines.

Most common issues with ice machines often occur from incorrect settings, dirty components or other environmental issues:

Issues that need to be addressed first:

  1. The machine has to be perfectly level
  2. The main water supply has to be constant and at a decent pressure.
  3. Air Temperature where the machine is located should be around 10°C to 40°C.
  4. The main Water Supply Temperature should be at around 5°C to 35°C.
  5. The main Water Supply Pressures should be at around 1 bar gauge to 5 bar gauge.
  6. The condenser must be clean and free of dirt.
  7. The condenser fans must work (in some instances the secondary fan only engages between cycles).
  8. The ice thickness sensor should be around 3mm to 5mm apart from the actual ice tray.
  9. The pump motor must be working correctly and free from debris and dirt.
  10. The ice cover must move freely and must engage the ice harvest sensor.

Common issues

Machine runs but not the compressor The compressor relay is not activating Faulty contactor
PC Board failure
Compressor burnt out – Test the motor windings.
The machine makes ice but not harvesting The ice sensor could be too thick Close the ice sensor to about 3mm from the ice tray.
The ice sensor may be dirty Clean the probes
The ice sensor may have a loose connection Check if the wiring is ok
The machine is making ice, but very slow Refrigerant may be low You may have to charge the ice machine with more refrigerant
Dirty condenser Clean out the condensing unit from dust or dirt.
The ice is thick on some sides and very thin on other sides. Water not flowing correctly Check if the machine is level

Adjust the water flow clamps to allow more water to flow

Refrigerant may be low If the ice is thick at the bottom but thin on top, the cause could be low refrigerant.
Only one fan works Note that if there are two fans, on some models the secondary fan will engage during freezing and harvesting cycles.
The ice quality is bad – broken and cracked The water flow is too fast Slow down the water flow by clamping the pipe
The ice is solid but small The water flow is too slow Open up the water restrictor to increase the flow.
The machine works but keeps going into fault after approximately 30 minutes without ice Dirty condenser unit Clean the condenser
