This is a guide to the tools generally required for refrigeration repairs such as brazing, compressor replacement and re-gassing.

Additional tools may be required depending on the work required, however, this list is a guideline for anyone who is starting out.

For suppliers please refer to the bottom of this page.

Pipe Preparation and Cutting Tools

Flaring and Swaging Tool Kit Used to create flares and swaging of pipe joints
Pipe Cutter Cuts pipes neater and cleaner.
Pipe Reamer Cleaning and deburring pipes after cutting.
3-in-One Pipe Bender1/4” + 5/16“ + 3/8″ Small pipe bender.

Brazing and Joining Tools

Mapp Gas Torch Brazing and heating up pipes for joints and couplings.
Mapp Gas Canister Brazing gas for small applications and pipes up to ½” 

 

For larger piping, a PortaPac is recommended.

Inspection mirror Used to inspect brazing points behind the line of sight.
Inspection flashlight Basic torch to inspect faults or brazing points.
Wire Brush Cleaning pipes and descaling after brazing.
Copper Brazing Rods Copper to copper brazing
Silver Solder For brazing:
  • Stainless Steel to Copper
  • Copper to Copper
  • Copper to Brass

General Tools

4mm to 19mm Open and Ring Spanners This is a pressurized bottle which is filled with R114 flushing liquid pressurized with R22 refrigerant to blast the solvent into the system.
Side Cutter, Pliers and Long Nose Pliers This is a small plastic bottle with a hole punctured on the lid. This is used to flush the system to prevent oil or benzene from atomising into the atmosphere.

This is used for flushing the system to capture any oil and fluids.

Digital thermometer with a metal probe Recommend using 3 thermometers to measure temperature differences at different locations.

System Flushing

AC Flushing Gun This is a pressurized bottle which is filled with R114 flushing liquid pressurized with R22 refrigerant to blast the solvent into the system.

Capture Bottle This is a small plastic bottle with a hole punctured on the lid. This is used to flush the system to prevent oil or benzene from atomising into the atmosphere.

Cleaning and Servicing

Small Leaf Blower Used for blowing and cleaning condensing and evaporator units.

Safety and PPE

Eye Protection Worn when blowing out condensers with a blower.

 

Recommended to wear during brazing as pipes may slip and flick molten brass.

Ear Protection Use when blowing out condensers with a blower.
Dust Mask Use when blowing out condensers with a blower.
Pig Skin Gloves Recommended to be worn during brazing.
General Protection Gloves Recommended when doing pipework which can have sharp edges.

Refrigerant Tools

R135a Adapter Used to attach to small refrigerant canisters.
Manifold Set Testing gas pressures and evacuating/re-gassing systems.
1 Stage Vacuum Pump Used to evacuate refrigeration systems.

Cold Rooms and Large Refrigeration Tools

1/2” Pipe Bender

3/4” Pipe Bender

5/8” Pipe Bender

7/8“ Pipe Bender

Create bends in pipes.

Mainly used for cold rooms.

Purchase the bender for the specific pipe only if needed!

Ratchet Wrench (1/4” + 3/8” + 3/16” + 5/16”) Wrench to open and close service valves.

Mainly used for cold rooms.

Acetylene / Oxygen Portapac Recommended for larger refrigeration units where more intense heat is required.
